Slowdown in consumption: retail sales fall, in line with the previous three months

A study by the National Chamber of Commerce (CNC) showed that from October 24 to 30, there was an annual nominal drop of 10.3% in retail sales and a decrease of 24.2% compared to the same week in 2021 when not considering supermarkets, further accentuating the fall compared to the previous two weeks.
The analysis – which measures the behavior of face-to-face and online retail sales – adds that specialized stores also mark an annual fall of 22.9%, while non-specialized stores fall a nominal 25% in the same week compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, supermarkets grew by 5.1% nominal annual in the same week.
The weeks of October then average a nominal drop of 4.3% and a fall of 13.3% without considering supermarkets, that is, in real terms the CNC reveals a weekly average drop of -17.1% in the sector in October and a fall of 26.1% when not considering supermarkets.
“This accounts for the slowdown in consumption, together with the high base of comparison, marking already a fourth month of decline in the weekly average,” they said from the CNC.
Regarding the weekly results, according to the report, in week 43 of the year (October 24 to 30) retail sales marked an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous week. At the same time, without considering supermarkets, a weekly increase of 8.5% is evident.
On the other hand, specialized stores marked a weekly increase of 8.7%, while non-specialized stores grew by 8.4% compared to week 42. Meanwhile, supermarkets marked an increase of 13.3% compared to week 42.
Prepared by the Department of Studies of the National Chamber of Commerce, this weekly indicator was born in May 2020 with the aim of measuring during the health-economic crisis of Covid-19 the behavior of retail sales (face-to-face and online) at the country level, represented by specialized stores, non-specialized stores / large stores and supermarkets.

The indicator measures the nominal variation in weekly sales with respect to the week preceding it (% variation with the previous week) and the nominal variation in weekly sales with respect to the same week of the previous year (% annual change).
