Hipólito Mora, former leader of self-defense groups in Michoacán, attacked in his orchard

Hipólito Mora, former founding leader of the self-defense groups in Michoacán, was attacked by armed people in his lemon orchard, located in Felipe Carrillo Puerto (La Ruana), municipality of Buenavista, which left two people dead.
The Michoacan prosecutor’s office reported that shortly after 11:00 am on Saturday, people detonated firearms against the activist, which were repelled by him and his bodyguards, who were unharmed.
He explained that derived from the exchange of gunfire, two of the alleged aggressors died, “whom their accomplices, before fleeing, stripped them of vests and firearms.”

In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said that in the place they located a motorcycle and ballistic evidence that were collected and packed for later analysis.
He indicated that the two people who died have not yet been identified and their bodies were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for the necropsy of law.
The Michoacan Prosecutor’s Office said it began the investigation tasks that allow the clarification of the facts.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat of Public Security of the state (SSP) reported that, after knowing the reports of the aggression, personnel of the agency mobilized to the area to assist in the investigation and, together with the federal and municipal forces, reinforced security in the area
He added that random checkpoints and patrols were set up on roads, villages and rural roads.

He indicated that civil guards activated a security device in the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, located in the municipality of Buenavista, where the aggression was recorded.

Hipólito Mora, dedicated most of his life to lemon production, burst onto the public scene in February 2013 when he announced that he was leading a self-defense movement in the municipality of Buenavista Tomatlán, which aimed to defend itself from threats and extortion perpetrated by the criminal group “The Knights Templar.”

The activist was also a candidate for federal deputy for the Citizen Movement party for the XII district of Michoacán based in Apatzingán, in 2015;
