More than 50% of teachers have not received training in sex education

In order to be able to know in an approximate way the level of knowledge or approach of the teachers in matters of sexuality, the survey “Approach to the didactics of sex education” was carried out. According to the figures, 50.8% of respondents indicate that they have not received any training in the subject.
The survey, carried out by the Chilean Association for the Protection of the Family (Aprofa), also highlights that among those who have not received training on sex education, it is mainly because they have not had the opportunity (85.5%).
On the other hand, of the teachers surveyed who declared that they had information on the subject, 92.5% were optionally through courses and/or diplomas in sex education.
According to the association, the interest in working and training in these issues is mostly between 20 and 40 years. That is, it is young people who most recognize the need to provide sex education to their students.
“It is important to evaluate ways for older people to access training spaces in comprehensive sex education and thus match the knowledge of students, regardless of the age of teachers,” says Aprofa.
Another data collected is that men have less interest in sex education topics. Of the total number of people surveyed, 84.3% identified with the female gender and 11.5% with the male gender.
“It is important to be able to generate strategies that attract more men to training spaces on sex education, so that the educational role in this matter does not fall on a single gender, as well as, in education spaces with more masculinized teaching bodies, students are not harmed in access to sex education.” comment from Aprofa.
On the question of whether they would like to receive or have received training in sex education, 99% of people answered yes. Of these, 93% believe that this training should be mandatory.

Finally, in relation to the issues that best suit them to address, in first place is the issue of gender and sexual diversities (52.9%), then issues such as love, affectivity and pleasure (42.2) and finally prevention of pregnancy, HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (40.2%).
The investigation, which was active for two months – between August and October of this year – was disseminated through social networks and collected a total of 159 responses.
