Peru: Congress blocked debate to advance elections

In the midst of the incessant protests that Peru is going through, in the last hours, Congress rejected Dina Boluarte’s proposal and blocked the debate to advance the elections until August. With eleven votes in favor, ten against and one abstention, the body chaired by Hernán Guerra García closed the possibilities of advancing the elections for this year, and thus set the date for 2026.From this decision, the vice president of the unicameral body presented the resignation. The reason why the congress rejected the proposal is that the initiative has already been presented before, and can only be discussed again at the next annual session, which begins at the end of July. Since her arrival in December after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo, who remains imprisoned, Dina Boluarte has encountered a complicated panorama, with the country mired in a wave of protests that caused the death of more than 50 people. For that reason, Boluarte repeatedly insisted on the advance of the elections, dated for 2026, by the end of 2023. In the face of rejection, there is only one option left for the renewal of the Executive and Legislative branches: the resignation of the president. However, previously, the president assured that she will not leave office.
