Donald Trump will be the first former president of the United States to face criminal charges, according to local media.
Trump has been indicted Thursday by a jury in New York for the payment during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence a former pornographic star who claimed to have maintained an extramarital affair with him.
Details of the charges have not yet been released.
A grand jury voted to have him indicted, after investigating the payment of $130,000 to the actress Stormy Daniels in an attempt to silence her about an alleged relationship in the past. Trump, who is being investigated for other cases and plans to run for the 2024 election, denies the allegations.
The former president’s lawyer, Susan Necheles, confirmed the formal indictment to CBS News, a partner of the BBC.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is expected to brief Trump and his lawyers shortly on the indictment.
Trump, who lives in Florida, is due to appear in New York to be formally arrested and appear before the judge for the arraignment for the first time.
That is expected to happen next week, the AP said.
