“Viedma, the Capital that was not” arrives at the San Martín Cultural Center

“Viedma, the Capital that was not”, the documentary film by Jorge Leandro Colás, arrives at the San Martín Cultural Center with screenings on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June and July. Tickets can be obtained here. History takes us back to 1986, when President Raúl Alfonsín proposed to move the capital of Argentina to the city of Viedma, in the province of Río Negro. With the slogan “to the south, the sea and the cold”, it initiates an ambitious project that aims to decentralize the state and federalize the country. Through testimonies and unpublished archival material, the film narrates the rise and fall of one of the greatest and at the same time extravagant dreams in our history. According to the director, these are “unfulfilled projects, truncated paths, collective frustrations, absences and nostalgia.” “Some time ago I began to have meetings with the protagonists of this story, to nourish myself with their stories in a direct and first-person way. I’ve known almost all of them since I was born, many are neighbors of the neighborhood, friends of my parents or even close relatives,” the filmmaker said in a press release. Jorge Leandro Colás studied Image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and specialized in documentary film. His feature films “Parador Retiro” (2009), “Los Pibes” (2015), “Barrefondo” (2017) and “La visita” (2019) were screened at BAFICI, Mar del Plata, IDFA, Cinéma du Réel, Biarritz and other international festivals.Photo: Courtesy of the press
