Garrahan: performed three simultaneous transplants with more than 100 professionals and technicians

With a great logistical deployment and the articulation of different support areas in addition to the operating room teams, Garrahan Hospital executed three interventions of the highest pediatric complexity. On the last Sunday of August, the national pediatric hospital successfully transplanted the heart to a 4-year-old boy, the liver to a one-year-old baby and the lung to a 13-year-old teenager. As reported from the institution, the Garrahan Liver Transplant WhatsApp group was activated on Saturday at 4:58 p.m.: Probable operation for a 12-month-old patient with biliary atresia said the first message. Communication was extended at the same time between cardiovascular and pulmonary surgeons, anesthesiologists and instrumentators. The multi-organ donation, from a public hospital in Junín, would allow Garrahan Hospital to transplant three patients simultaneously. The operation was carried out that included air and ambulance travel, and required the presence of a team of almost 100 people, in addition to the support teams, the hospital carried out three interventions that allowed implanting a heart to a 4-year-old child, the liver to a 1-year-old baby and the lung to a 13-year-old girl. In the first place, to thank and value the solidarity of a family that in the face of a tragic event such as the death of a loved one transcends the act of donating organs and decides to help other children or adolescents, “said the president of the Board of Directors of Garrahan Hospital, Gabriela Bauer, Then, she added: “Secondly, Recognize the dedication, effort and attitude of the wonderful people at the hospital who immediately articulate as a team to make this result possible.” As always when a transplant operation begins, the most important thing is to ensure the logistics so that, like clockwork, everyone takes their place at the appointed time. To this usual complexity, in this case, the volume of the teams of professionals and technicians was added due to the simultaneity of transplants that allowed multiorgan donation. Behind the medical “high complexity” that this therapy requires, there are anesthesiologists, surgical instrumentators, thoracic surgeons, cardiovascular, hepatic, perfusionists, hemotherapists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, hematologists, administrative assistants, drivers and airplane pilots, in addition to support teams and post-transplant care. This triple transplant means that Garrahan Hospital continues to carry the flag of child transplantology in Argentina and that is very important, “said Imventarza, adding “we continue working on the path of doing forty-five liver transplants per year to improve the quality of life of patients who need it. ”
