Milei invited Lula to his inauguration through a letter

After the tense exchanges he had with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio da Silva during 2023, Javier Milei sent him an invitation through a letter to attend his inauguration, in a whirlwind trip by Deputy Diana Mondino to meet with Mauro Vieira, Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs. With the result of the runoff, strong criticism of the president-elect in Argentina resounded from Brazil for his repeated attacks on Lula in interviews and social networks. The Brazilian president’s inner circle said at the time that it was very unlikely that he would attend the inauguration on December 10, and even demanded an apology from Milei for his “offenses.” With two weeks to go before the date set for the transfer of power, the Liberal leader sent, through Mondino, a particular invitation to the leader of the Workers’ Party for his inauguration. “I know that you know and fully value what this moment of transition means for the historical journey of the Argentine Republic, its people, and naturally for me and the team of collaborators who will accompany me in the next administration of government,” the Argentine president wrote in an excerpt of the letter. Along these lines, the liberal economist pointed out the joint work that both governments must carry out to grow in economic and social matters. “Both nations have many challenges ahead of us and I am convinced that a change in the economic, social and cultural spheres, based on the principles of freedom, will position us as competitive countries in which their citizens can develop their capabilities to the fullest and thus choose the future they want,” he said. Likewise, Milei remarked that in his administration he wants to continue sharing “areas of complementarity” to achieve “growth and prosperity for Argentines and Brazilians.” Finally, the President expressed his hope that “the time together as Presidents and Heads of Government will be a stage of fruitful work and building ties”. It is no coincidence that the Liberal leader invited him, and it was Daniel Scioli, the Argentine ambassador to Brazil, who, with the aim of strengthening the bond between the two presidents, met last Wednesday with the Brazilian Ambassador to Argentina. After that meeting, Scioli communicated his intentions to Guillermo Francos and, with his approval, proposed to Mondino the whirlwind trip to carry out the meeting. Even without an official response from Lula, who remains uncertain about his presence at the inauguration, the gesture of rapprochement marks a drastic change in Milei’s attitude, days before taking office.
