A web accessibility project for people with disabilities is promoted

The Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires approved a project presented by legislator Juan Manuel Valdés, president of the Disability Commission, aimed at improving web accessibility for people with disabilities in the region. This bill establishes the obligation for the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, its decentralized agencies, non-state public entities and state-owned enterprises to comply with the standards and requirements of information accessibility determined by the National Office of Information Technologies (ONTI) in the design of their websites, tools, technologies and applications.” We are proud that the City of Buenos Aires today takes another step towards digital inclusion,” said legislator Valdés, who led this effort to ensure that the more than 300,000 people with disabilities who reside in the city have equal access to technology. The initiative is a fundamental step towards complying with Article 9 of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified by Law No. 26,378, which ensures equal access for persons with disabilities to physical environments, transportation, systems, information and communication technologies and the Internet.” This initiative is in line with the needs that were raised by the Disability Observatory of the Council of the Magistracy of the City, where they found that the most common barriers that affected people with disabilities in accessing justice had to do with digital environments,” added Valdés. It joins a package of initiatives already presented, such as training in disability perspective for all workers of the Buenos Aires State, the creation of the Plan for the Repair and Maintenance of Sidewalks and Pedestrian Crossings and the update of Law 2219 that proposes to include games adapted for people with disabilities in the squares.
