Mexico. – The President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, mentioned during his morning press conference, on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from the National Palace, that he will promote a reform of the pension system so that workers receive what they earn in salary when they retire.

“What we are going to do is an analysis, a run to see how much we need, and for the government to help, for us to also reach an agreement with the private sector, to begin with, as the reform is not going to have such drastic effects, this is going to hit hard from the next six-year term.”

This will seek to ensure that workers receive their full salary at the time of retirement and not just half, as is currently the case, but this constitutional change seems unlikely, because the ruling party lacks enough votes in the Congress of the Union to achieve it.

Regarding the question of whether this measure would imply the disappearance of the Afores, the governor of Tabasco assured that this would not happen, although he affirmed that the government could also assume the task of managing the savings of the workers.

López Obrador expressed his commitment to review this legislation and stressed the injustice and inhumanity of a worker, under current laws, receiving only half of his active salary when he retires after 30 years of service.

In his morning conference on Friday, January 12, López Obrador rejected that his initiative to reform the pension system aims to keep the money from these and pointed out that: “How am I going to keep the money if I am not corrupt.”

“I’ve already been hearing from those who are thinking, what’s it called? (Sergio) Sarmiento, who is an opponent of us and a strong defender of the bosses, is thinking… I think he wrote about what we want is to keep all the savings, all the pensions. We are not rats, we are not corrupt! It’s not that.”
