Jorge Griffa, symbol of Newell’s and trainer of renowned footballers, has died

This Monday Jorge Griffa passed away, he is an Argentine soccer player and known for having made young promises of soccer grow who became the sports figures of our country such as Jorge Valdano, Gabriel Batistuta and Carlos Tevez, among many others. He started at Newell’s and was part of the Argentine National Team that won the Copa America in 1959. He then emigrated to Spain to play for Atletico Madrid for 10 years where he won the Copa del Rey three times, the Spanish League and a European Cup Winners’ Cup. The last years of his football career were spent at Deportivo Espanyol.After hanging up his boots, he continued in football as youth coaches at Newell’s and promoted players such as Gabriel Batistuta, Jorge Valdano, Américo “Tolo” Gallego, Ricardo Giusti and many others. He did the same at Boca and thanks to his work figures such as Carlos Tevez, Éver Banega, Sebastián Battaglia, Fernando Gago, Nicolás Burdisso and more were promoted. In recent times he was as coordinator of the youth team of Independiente, where he promoted a young Esequiel Barco to the first team.From the social networks of Newell’s they confirmed his death: “We deeply regret the death of Jorge Bernardo Griffa. The Master, the undisputed symbol of Newell’s, was a player, youth coach and the creator of the leper seedbed that gave enormous figures to the world. Your legacy will always be part of our history, may you rest in peace.”
