Mexico. – The newspaper El Universal published an investigation into the shortage of medicine in the so-called Megapharmacy, created by the federal government to curb the shortage of medicine in the country, it began its operation with only 0.9 percent of its storage capacity.
 
This facility has an estimated storage capacity of 280 million pieces, reported Laboratorios de Biológicas y Reactivos de México (Birmex) in response to a request for information made by El Universal.
 
On January 19 at the National Palace, during a press conference, it was reported that the Megapharmacy started its operations with only 2,465,975 pieces, with a value of 119,81,248 pesos, according to Jens Pedro Lohmann Iturburu, director of the state-owned company.
 
This figure pointed to the fact that they can only supply one out of every 100 drugs that are requested, since according to information shared by Birmex to the aforementioned media, the facilities have an estimated capacity for 280 million pieces.
 
In addition, according to the information in the report, the head of the state-owned company said that until the day of the conference, the Federal Center for the Storage and Distribution of Health Supplies (Cefedis, the official name of the space where the megapharmacy is located), filled about 67 prescriptions during a period of 21 days in which they received approximately 6,364 calls.
 
Zoé Robledo, head of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, commented at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning conference on Tuesday, January 30, that they do have all the necessary medicines and denied El Universal’s accusation.
 
“What does El Universal do? In a request for information it says: ‘How much would be the maximum capacity of all of Huehuetoca? Not only the part of the Mega Pharmacy, but also what they were able to see in the visit, the Distribution and Storage Center, which is the largest space,” he said.
