Morelia, Michoacán. – Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and the delegation of the European Union in Mexico will promote the generation of geographical indications of Michoacan handicrafts to recognize and protect the origin, quality and traditional elaboration of the products, as they shared through a statement. In a meeting with members of this delegation, the president shared that the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) accepted the procedures to obtain the geographical indications of the hammered copper of Santa Clara del Cobre and the clay catrinas of Capula. In addition, there are other handicraft products with the potential to obtain the geographical indication, such as the guitars of Paracho, the sphere of Tlalpujahua, the clay pineapples of San José de Gracia, and the pottery of Zipiajo and Capula. He recalled that the artisanal certification marks were recently delivered for the embroideries of Zacán, pots and embroideries of Cocucho, frayed of San Felipe de los Herreros, rebozo of Ahuirán, and maque or wood art of Michoacán. These processes, he added, have been promoted in his administration to protect the origin, raw material, quality and tradition of Michoacan products, so achieving the geographical indication will give added value and international recognition to them. The Minister Counselor and head of the European Economic and Commercial Section, Jorge Peydro Aznar, highlighted the interest in accompanying the actions to achieve more geographical indications in Michoacán so that they are recognized in Europe. To this end, it was agreed to coordinate work with the State Government agencies to move forward with these processes that benefit 50,000 artisans from different craft branches.
