United States: more than 1,200 flights cancelled due to the storm

Due to the severe storm that filled the northeast of the United States with snow on Tuesday for the first time in the last two years, more than 1,200 flights were canceled, along with the closure of schools and courts in the area. Covered by snow, the streets of New York woke up on Tuesday, which returned to using snow plows after seasons in which the phenomenon did not affect the city. For that reason, schools remained closed this morning with online classes, just like in the pandemic, to which one million students had access. Through a statement, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported that during the early morning “2.5 to 5 centimeters of snow per hour” fell in areas of New York, generating an unusual accumulation in the city that had to be treated immediately by the authorities to avoid major problems. The NWS also warned that coastal flooding could occur that would affect more than 30 million people due to its proximity, noting that “strong winds and heavy snowfall that could damage trees, power lines and disrupt travel” will inevitably arrive. In that sense, the city authorities recommended that residents stay in their homes to avoid traffic problems as well as accidents due to the fall of snow at night when the temperature will drop, which could generate a layer of snow of up to 15 centimeters.
