Congress will focus on the DNU after the frustrated treatment of the Omnibus Law

During the next week and in the midst of the wait for the creation of the bicameral commission for its analysis, Congress will focus on the treatment of the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) 70/2023. In addition, the ruling party in the Senate has stopped the attempts of the Union for the Homeland to open the precinct. President Javier Milei did not extend the extraordinary sessions until the end of the month, leaving Congress focused solely on the lengthy decree presented on Dec. 20, which addresses economic deregulation in more than 300 articles. The DNU has generated disagreement between different political blocs, being rejected by the Union for the Homeland and the Left, and creating internal divergences between La Libertad Avanza and the PRO. Meanwhile, the Radical Civic Union (UCR), We Do Federal Coalition, Federal Innovation and other provincial blocs present divided opinions. However, the treatment of the decree requires the formation of the Bicameral Legislative Procedure, which has not yet been finalized. In the Chamber of Deputies, both the ruling party and the main opposition bloc led by Germán Martínez are disputing one of the eight available seats, due to divergent interpretations of the rules. In this context, Martín Menem, president of the lower house, asked Unión por la Patria to present three names for the commission, in accordance with the proportional representation established by law. The dispute over the creation of the bicameral began last December at the request of Union for the Fatherland, and has received support from sectors of the UCR and Hacemos Coalición Federal in recent days.
