5 Questions To Jaze About The Release Of “The Terminal,” His New Song

Since Jaze decided to settle in Argentina, he has only strengthened his path as a musical artist. Born in Lima, Peru, he was champion of the freestyle competitions hosted by Red Bull and FMS there, but in 2023 he began a new stage in his career by moving to Buenos Aires. Now, after releasing and promoting his latest album “Toy Lokazo” from Argentine lands, he is presenting a new single and from Filo.news We sent 5 questions to better understand this professional moment.1. Your album ‘TOY LOKAZO’ has already had its tour, how do you feel the public received it?
I feel that it had a very special reception from the public, I was releasing songs further away from hip hop and I have a very large audience that followed me through the freestyle battles, so I felt that I had to do a project that involves a little more rapping.
I’m very happy because they received the album very nicely, it’s had a lot of punch and affection and so far I’m very grateful for it. I’m really looking forward to being able to present it in different places and especially in Peru that I haven’t been able to yet.2. Now you released LA TERMINAL, a new single in which you are introspective and vulnerable, how was the development of this song? How long have you been working on it?
It was quite a long process. Almost 2 years ago the first idea was born, and I had it in a voice note on my cell phone. I started working on it last year when I moved here to Argentina with Nico Btesh and Diego Mema, at the EL Mar studio. It was a very beautiful process, how the song found its way. At the beginning it was a song of guitar and voice, it ended up having a more elaborate rhythm and thrown to hip hop beyond the fact that the aesthetic is more soulful or r&b, but it still carries that essence of hip hop in some way.
The development was very special, very nice, and now I enjoy that the song is already out.3. For several singles you have been exploring a sound more towards melodic indie pop, how did you arrive at that sound and how do you find yourself in it being that you come from the freestyle style?
I became known for freestyle so I’ve always had people ask me why, if I come from freestyle, I suddenly made songs more indie or r&b, or songs different from what one would imagine from a freestyler, but many people don’t know that prior to what happened to me with freestyle I had a life of having my dad a musician. So I was always very close to music, and my influences are more inclined to rock.
Then freestyle comes in, so I feel that now in songs like ‘La Terminal’ or ‘Las consecuencias’ both worlds coexist because I have a way of singing that has some rapping, and I feel that that’s what also makes people identify my freestyler side subtly in my songs even though they’re not rap songs.
Now ‘La Terminal’ has a little bit of that as well and I think Nico understood that search quite well that I had, and that’s why it has that sound and that identity.4. You gave a show of your own at Lollapalooza Argentina, how did you experience it?
It was a dream come true, I had dreamed of it a lot throughout my life. To be able to get there and see the stages when I was coming in with the band, and play with a group of friends, because my band is a group of friends.
It was very special, very nice, unforgettable and I am still very grateful to have been able to fulfill that dream, and now to dream big and hopefully I can come back as well.
In addition to playing, were you able to see any shows that caught your attention?
After playing I had to leave, I didn’t have much time to see as I would have liked. I got to see a little bit of YSY A and you can also see a little bit of the album by Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso, but I wanted to see a little more, but hey, I had to travel.5. What’s next in your career? What projects do you have?
Now ‘The Terminal’ is out, now what continues is a mystery. What I do know is that I want to continue putting together an album with this sound and this identity that I’m going to be working on during the year and I’ll be giving you those new songs.
In the meantime, continuing to present ‘TOY LOKAZO’ that came out a year ago which seems like a lot but it’s not that much and I feel like there’s still a lot of things to do around. We still need to play in Peru as well. Putting together the new shows and continuing to work on the new album.
