“We must not be hypocrites”: The head of the bloc of deputies of UxP complained about the salary of legislators

In the midst of the controversy over the strong increase that the senators approved, the head of the Union for the Homeland bloc of deputies, Germán Martínez, complained about the salaries received by the legislators. “We must not be hypocrites, we need to recover the allowances of senators and deputies,” he said. Interviewed by Futuröck, the mayor said that the daily life of legislators “was affected” by the inflationary process of recent months. “I want Congress to function well, and in addition to the effort made by deputies and senators, they also earn properly,” he said. According to his explanation, the salaries of congressional representatives have been frozen since last November. Added to this, he continued, are the accommodation costs that must be faced by legislators from the interior who come to work in Buenos Aires. “Approximately 70% of his income goes to Buenos Aires sleeping and eating on the days he has to work there,” he said. “It is a situation that must be analyzed seriously, it must be resolved quickly because it affects the parliamentary work of the Chamber of Deputies, we must not be hypocritical, we need to recover the allowances of senators and deputies. Then you have to see how, when, but you have to start from that basic agreement,” he added. For Martinez, the problem lies in President Javier Milei’s decision to repeal former President Cristina Kirchner’s resolution, which ‘hooked’ the update in legislators’ allowances to the parity of congressional employees, after ordering last March to roll back the 30% increase that had been granted in both chambers. “It was a normal, dignified system. We had to earn more than the employees of the House, that was what was intended. They disengaged from that place and now they can’t find a way around it,” Martinez said.
