SAO PAULO (AP) – Jair Bolsonaro President-elect reiterated on Thursday plans to move Brazil Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as did before United States and Guatemala bad. The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has quickly welcomed the plan. In a Tweet posted Thursday, Bolsonaro said: “as I stated previously during our campaign, we plan to move the Brazilian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Israel is a sovereign State and everyone should respect it.”
This was the first time since his election last Sunday that Bolsonaro referred to his plan to move the diplomatic headquarters.
In Israel, Netanyahu issued a statement praising Bolsonaro. “I congratulate my friend the President-elect of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, by its intention to move the Brazilian Embassy to Jerusalem a historic, correct and exciting step!”, said the note.
Netanyahu spoke with Bolsonaro earlier this week to congratulate him on his election victory and invite him to visit the country. If Bolsonaro delivers on its promise, Brazil would become the third country to move their diplomatic legation to Jerusalem, after United States and Guatemala. Paraguay also made the move, but shortly afterwards returned to Tel Aviv following the election of its new President, Mario Abdo Benítez.
The Palestinians claim Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 war, as the capital of a future State, while Israel considers the entire city, including the eastern sector where they are the most important religious sites, as if eternal capital .
