translated from Spanish: The ITM students present electric wheelchair people with muscular dystrophy

Morelia, Michoacan.-it is tomorrow undergraduate students of the Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, “José María Morelos and Pavón”, presented a project of research which consisted in making adjustments to a power wheelchair to meet the needs of a young man who suffers from the disease of muscular dystrophy Becker PhD in computational modeling of processes in engineering, Juan Cristóbal Camacho Arriaga, and the mechanical engineer, Héctor Martínez Domínguez, MITADAM company accompanied young in their research, “Technology assistive of mobility for patients with dystrophy muscle Becker”, same that will initiate the registration process before the Mexican Institute of Industrial property, which is to strengthen the collaboration with the company MITADAM and the ITM for the creation of assistive technology for low-cost for people with different abilities.
The multidisciplinary team that developed this project, led by the ITM, the doctor Camacho Arriaga integrate it: the company’s technological development MITADAM, Héctor Martínez Domínguez who is also a student of master of the ITM; Fermín López López and Luis Enrique chalice Madrigal, students in engineering mechanics and materials respectively.
During the Conference Press, the researcher who is leading the project said that they are in process of making adjustments, adapted to the needs of those who need it, also are making administrative procedures to start the registration process and if there is more people requiring this project may approach and apply for work and collaboration.
Becker muscular dystrophy disease is among the causes of disability for disabled more common, among others, this affects muscles in the arms and legs; the patient can not force a limb and makes it impossible to take an upright from a seat or lifting with arms up to higher places its hip height.
Since this disease is progressive, several patients develop skills with the strength that can still generate as moving throughout the body while seated or even walking with knees fully blocked.
The project consisted of developing a mechanism as a modification to a trolley type commercial scooter, powered by two electric actuators, which will help so that Daniel de Maria y Campos safe, a young patient who suffers from this disease, can sit to different heights, to meet their need for ergonomics, and take it to an upright position, allowing the user with the strength that can exercise to use this mechanism to start walking by itself.
To have even the shopping cart function, the user can move and make use of the mechanism where it is more convenient. The upright human is important for your health, because it promotes good circulation of blood as well as contributes to better breathing. This project ultimately results in a better quality of life for Daniel María.
A mobile type scooter performance similar to the modified, with approximately 100 Kg load capacity, in the market can cost more than 58 thousand pesos. In terms of the implementation of the mechanism, there are similar chairs with height adjustment, can mostly be found outside the national territory, offered in United States of America and Europe, its cost round 4 thousand 196 euros (approximately $91 mil 547) pesos at the current exchange rate), and with limitations such as adjusting height of 30 cm.
The cost of the mechanism designed and manufactured by MITADAM SA de CV, in collaboration with the Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia of the TecNM, 20 thousand was 986.21 pesos, which was added to a mobile scooter, which was already owned by the end user.
