In common agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Senate Labour Committee, the Government decided to withdraw the urgency to the project that seeks to create insurance to guarantee income to self-employed workers who deliver fee tickets in the current economic crisis caused by COVID-19.
Regarding the determination, the chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, Senator Juan Pablo Letelier (PS) said: “The conviction of the majority of the members of the committee is that it was a bad project, it was poorly designed, and not only the senators of the opposition, but also the officialism, did not share the design of the project.” “There was a conversation with the minister (of finance, Ignacio) Briones, who raised that they were going to withdraw the urgency, they were not going to insist on the project as it is and they raised the opposition’s concern to separate the project, permanently, from the coverage of the pandemic,” Letelier warned.
In line with Letelier’s sayings, Sen. DC Carolina Goic said they agreed to “suspend the processing of this complex project, because it creates a medium-term mechanism, which also places a permanent burden on all workers at fees including those who will not have the benefit.”
In addition, following the suspension of the processing of the bill, the senator noted that the Labor Committee sued the government of President Piñera to reformulate the initiative and deliver a benefit now, independent of the processing of insurance.
“We have asked the Government to generate an alternative that separates this immediate support from a mechanism that we can discuss calmly, so that it permanently protects workers at fees so that it can generate a benefit now, immediately, of course, that workers be quickly handed over to fees that have lost their income to the pandemic,” Senator DC added.
