translated from Spanish: Tragedy in L12 is not to slit politics, don’t blame austerity: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked this morning not to take out “political slash” and take advantage of the tragedy that occurred on Metro Line 12, where last Monday, May 3rd, a lock collapsed, leaving 25 dead and more than 60 wounded.
Questioned about the Metro union’s call for a stoppage of work before bad conditions in the Collective Transportation System, the representative said those attitudes do not help.

He also called it “politicking” that the Conservative party has come to the site of the tragedy.
“That they think about because nothing is helped by these attitudes, that has more to do with the electoral, with politicking, as we are in campaign time, yesterday they went from the conservative party to the site and even the same people rejected them. They are very irresponsible attitudes, it is not to crack, take advantage of the tragedy,” he argued.

The representative asked union leaders to act with responsibility and report to the authorities, but not to fall into manipulation and opportunism.
“It is not to crack, to take advantage of the tragedy, but bitterness in the national and international media is inevitable. There is a crisis in the media around the world, a lack of ethics that had not been seen,” he reiterated.
Yesterday, the president accused the press of being the farthest from the people: “The rule is that we have the most unfair press, the most distant, the farthest from the people, and the closest to conservative power groups. It’s a dark time for the media.”

What it has to do with austerity
López Obrador also criticized those who hold his austerity policy accountable for what happened on Metro Line 12.
“What does that have to do with austerity, they are very perverse, conservatives are very hypocritical (…) are scoundrel times.”
The Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) Mexico City condemned the application of budget sub-criteria for the STC Metro, so it requested that local authorities face the consequences for austerity policy.
According to the business sector, the 2020 public account recorded up to 40% sub-activity in expenditure for maintenance materials and supplies.
“The call to austerity made by the Government of Mexico City should not be applied in transcendental and vitally important areas, such as maintaining the backbone of CDMX mobility, because instead of being savings that make public spending efficient, it has become an austerity that kills,” he said in a statement.

#Comunicado Since @Coparmex_CDMX solidarity with the people who suffered yesterday’s mishap in the #Línea12; we are certain that the call to austerity should not apply to such important issues as the maintenance of @MetroCDMX. https://t.co/Hk8NQfOIUC

“They have already concluded that by austerity it was the accident, this immorality is what I mean when I talk about the decline of media and a sector of society that I identify as a conservative sector whose doctrine is hypocrisy and is a sector very adequent to corruption, and at the same time very authoritarian and racist and classist,” the representative said.
