Earthquake of 6.8 degrees shakes Guatemala; damage is reported

A strong earthquake of 6.8 degrees on the Richter scale shook early Wednesday morning several localities in Guatemala reported the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh). According to the report, the earthquake was recorded at 1:12 local time on the coasts of Escuintla about 54 kilometers from Mazatenango and about 57 from Retalhuleu. For its part, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala (CONRED) reported that the earthquake has so far left some damage to homes and roads. However, he ruled out that the claim has caused damage to people. In this sense, CONRED invited citizens to remain calm, and reported that after the earthquake this morning the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis system was activated in Guatemala in order to detect any situation of risk, emergency or disaster. Civil Protection Mexico announced that after the earthquake registered in Chiapas the Tsunami Warning Center of the Secretariat of the Navy ruled out any important variation in sea levels.
