Brazil continues as the country with the most deaths from homophobia in the world: there is one victim every 29 hours

At least 300 LGBTQIA+ people were victims of homophobia in Brazil last year – practically one daily – a figure that keeps the South American giant as the country with the highest number of murders of this population worldwide.
According to the annual balance released by the NGO Grupo Gay da Bahia, an LGBTQIA+ person is a victim of violent death in Brazil every 29 hours.
The report notes that crimes increased by 8% compared to 2020, a number that may be higher, since according to the organization the number of victims disclosed “only represent the tip of an iceberg of hatred and blood.”
The group of homosexuals was the most affected by lethal violence in the country in 2021 when it again occupied the first place in the ranking of LGBTQIA+ deaths, with 51% of cases, after that fateful space was occupied by transgender victims in 2020.
In total, 153 homosexuals lost their lives to homophobia last year in the South American giant. It was followed by transvestite and transgender victims (with 110 cases), lesbians (12) and bisexual and trans men, with four cases.
There was also an occurrence of a non-binary person and one of a heterosexual person, the latter being confused with a gay person.
According to the balance sheet, most of the victims were killed (92%), while the other 8% committed suicide.
Sao Paulo was the state with the highest number of deaths (42), followed by Bahia (32), Minas Gerais (27) and Rio de Janeiro (26).
The report also notes that about 47% of the LGBTQIA+ population was between the ages of 20 and 39.
These data are based on news published in the media, which are collected, analyzed and disseminated by the Gay da Bahia Group for 40 years, but which do not reflect “the bloody reality of this population in Brazil.”
According to the founder of the NGO, Luis Mott, “the carelessness of the police and the negligence of journalists to accurately record the basic information indispensable for the identification of murdered LGBTQIA+ (people)” hinders a more accurate documentation of these crimes that reveal “the cultural homotransphobia that stains Brazilian society.”
