Del Potro, intimate: from the death of his father to the “miracle” to return to play

Juan Martín Del Potro spoke with an open heart after his return to the circuit on that emotional night in which he played against Federico Delbonis at the Argentina Open.

In a hand-to-hand talk with Mariano Zabaleta, the current vice president of the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT), which premiered this Tuesday, March 1 on the Star+ platform and is part of the cycle “In the first person”, the tandilense tells details about his pain in the right knee, talks about the possibility of a miracle that allows him to compete again, and also refers to intimate issues such as his desire to be a father, the death of his father and sister, the relationship he has with his mother and the economic problems he has to go through. One of the most moving moments of the conversation was when the Torre de Tandil referred to his mother, Patricia, who went to see him for the first time that February night at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis. “My mom wasn’t suffering, she was at peace,” Delpo said. And he said: “I was left with the thorn of not being able to take my dad to the US Open, to Wimbledon and that they can know what I was in the world.”

Referring to the need to be able to heal from pain in his right knee, the former world number 3 not only proposes it with the aim of playing again, but he thinks about the future and be able to enjoy when he is a father. “I would like to have several children. I would like to live in Tandil. I have to heal my leg because how can I not ride a bike with my son? Or to play tennis if one day he says to me, ‘Che, show me how you did.’ Or football. That active father, that’s how I would like to be,” he said. On the other hand, Del Potro, who will soon have a documentary series (“Juan Martín del Potro, the last match point”) of 3 episodes, spoke about the goodbye to his father, who passed away in January 2021. “When my dad was sick they would see me. I spent nights at the door of the clinic, it was the time of the strongest Covid. It took me about 40 minutes to see my dad to change, so when they the doctors don’t applaud, I lived it, because it was my turn to put on three pairs of gloves, goggles, helmet, both, things on my feet to see my dad two meters or through a glass.
