María Elisa Quinteros: “The Convention is a not perfect representation, but very close to society”

The President of the Constitutional Convention (CC), María Elisa Quinteros, defended the work done in the drafting body and emphasized that the norms that now make up the draft of the new Magna Carta account for the consensus that exists within the instance. In that sense, along with defining his peers as a “representation close to society,” he stressed that “all these norms have been approved, on average, with 122 votes.”
“That is very high, because let’s remember that the minimum for them to be approved is 103. This means that these 161 norms, in order to be approved, 80% of the constituents voted in favor of these norms. So, when we talk about that there is no dialogue or there is no consensus, the truth is that it does exist, because we are talking since July of last year, because we are a human group that we have begun to know each other from the beginning, “said the helmsman of the board of directors of the CC.
During a new public account of the Constitutional Convention, within the framework of an activity called “Constituting Santiago”, supported by the capital municipality led by Mayor Irací Hassler and in which the neighbors had the opportunity to raise their doubts about the constituent process, María Elisa Quinteros said that the conventional “we have learned to know each other, to see our differences that are very legitimate, because we all think differently, we have different biographies and different life experiences, and to see what we can agree on for the meaning of those we represent.”
“The Convention is a not perfect representation, but very close to society. There is everything, there are the political parties that guide in the countries and that are important. There are also the independents, there are the social movements and the native peoples. There is a very rich diversity that has not been seen in the history of the country,” said the President of the Constitutional Convention.

Pointing out that the “Apruebo” will be the winner, Quinteros also took the opportunity to address the results of the polls that give as the winner the option of “Rejection” in the exit plebiscite to which the draft of the new Magna Carta will be submitted on Sunday, September 4.

The highest authority of the Constitutional Convention maintained that his statement “is not stubborn or because he has a very high ego.” In no way, he said, but it happens that “this process is the only democratic one we have had.”
“The Constitution of ’80 is illegitimate in its origin, so what we are building by itself is valid, because we are doing it in a joint and democratic way. Of course, if it is rejected it is a very sad scenario, because the Constitution of 80 will remain and all the possibility of improvements that we have for the country, in terms of Social Rights, of the Justice System and everything we have seen, will be stagnant, “argued María Elisa Quinteros.
“The rules we have passed are a lot of common sense, so we have a duty as constituents to properly report what is left,” he said.
