Boys and girls at home: experts recommend what to do during the winter holidays

A month of winter vacation have this year the students of Basic and Middle Education in the country, a long time, which caregivers and parents face in different ways. Some return to teleworking systems and those who work outside their homes analyze alternatives so that the smallest of the home do not get bored or only develop activities with screens.
Therefore, specialists from the University of Talca called on mothers, fathers, relatives and guardians to remain calm when developing strategies for these weeks of academic rest.
The professor of Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education mention English of the University of Talca, Carolina Correa, indicated that these spaces are an opportunity to reflect, considering that the learning of children is not restricted only to the classroom, but also relieves the role of the family as the first educator.
“The general recommendation is to spend quality time with the children. I understand that not all families are fortunate enough to be able to synchronize their holidays with those of the minors, however, the invitation is to organize the moments they have to share with the family, talking, listening to their needs and proposing to carry out daily activities in which they can be involved according to their age and development. ” Expressed.
In this same line, Pablo López, director of the Occupational Therapy career of the house of studies, pointed out that, during these holidays it is appropriate to maintain balance and flexibility in the activities carried out by the children. “It is about generating routines that involve occupationally significant activities and that promote their well-being, balance, participation in leisure activities, play, free time and also their respective hours of rest and sleep,” he explained.
López urged that “families try to maintain spaces for participation, which generate meaningful links within the family context, with group games or activities where the entire nucleus of the home is involved,” he recommended.
In this sense, Professor Correa listed some activities that can be done together such as cooking simple recipes, practicing a sport, generating spaces for plastic expression or others, according to the interests of each one. “Doing activities outside the home, such as going to the movies, visiting a museum and enjoying stories are highly advisable, not only in this period,” he said.
The academic also suggested “maintaining, with a certain degree of flexibility, the routine of feeding and sleeping, protecting, for example, at least 10 hours of sleep a day for children between 3 and 5 years old and, of course, limiting the use of electronic devices such as tablets, computers and cell phones, favoring the play of children within the home and with their peers in squares, parks or other open spaces in contact with nature”.

A good alternative, said the director of the Occupational Therapy career, is to be attentive to the activities that are programmed and proposed from different institutions such as municipalities, universities, cultural centers, neighborhood groups and civil society.
“There are several activities where you can participate, such as communal competitions, sports, going to the parks, contests between neighborhood councils, which promote the proper integral development of children, their well-being, satisfaction and participation,” he recommended.
