Before the media, the governor of Nayarit, Miguel Ángel Navarro, announced the resignation of the official and again offered a public apology for what happened.
“I make the request, through you, that you accept a public apology for having altered the colors of our homeland flag; I respect the homeland, and in no way should it have been done, but there are, I insist, imponderables that are beyond my reach, but I take responsibility,” he said.

Article 191 of the Federal Criminal Code provides for penalties for those who alter national symbols.
“Anyone who misuses the national shield, insignia or anthem will be applied from three days to one year in prison and a fine of twenty-five to a thousand pesos,” the document states.
