With this, the State of Mexico joins other entities in the country such as Veracruz, CDMX, Jalisco, Durango and Yucatan that also recognize equal marriage.
The reform also endorses the recognition of same-sex concubinage.

“Persons in concubinage have the rights and obligations of family maintenance, hereditary and protection against family violence, recognized in this Code and in other legal provisions, as well as that established for the spouses in everything that is applicable to them, especially those aimed at the protection of women, daughters and sons”, it reads in the initiative.
Marriage equality in Mexico
In 2015, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) opened the door for same-sex marriages to be celebrated throughout Mexico, despite the fact that local laws do not consider it legal.
The first chamber of the highest court, in charge of hearing civil and criminal matters, established that the laws of any state in the country that considers that the purpose of marriage “is procreation and / or that defines it as that celebrated between a man and a woman, is unconstitutional.”
