Daylight Saving Time has been in effect since 1996. This 2022, daylight saving time began on April 3 and concludes on Sunday, October 30.
The elimination of daylight saving time has been promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself. The president affirms that there is no longer any reason to maintain it because he considers that “it has more negative effects on people’s health than benefits.”
The initiative states that, since daylight saving time was introduced, the savings have been less than 1% of the total energy consumed annually. For example, in 2021 the savings were 0.16% of annual consumption.
Although the document assures that it is minimal, it is a fact that, according to figures cited by the same initiative, from 2017 to 2021 the energy savings were 3 thousand 804 gigawatts per hour (GWh), equivalent to 8 thousand 621 million pesos.
