Morena fined for not disclosing office information

The National Electoral Institute (INE) approved fining Morena with one thousand 500 times the Unit of Measure and Update (UMA) for having refused to make transparent the information of its offices located on National Army Avenue, in Mexico City.
The sanction, equivalent to 144,330 pesos and approved unanimously on Wednesday, stems from the fact that the party disregarded resolutions of the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) that ordered it to deliver information on the subject.
During the session of the General Council of the INE, the body concluded that Morena acted with malice by disobeying the orders of the INAI. Councillor Ciro Murayama considered that the party’s refusal to provide the requested information can be taken as “pure and hard opacity.”

At the end of 2021, Morena reserved information about the 359 National Army building for three years, arguing that releasing it would put party officials at risk.
Animal Político had requested this information and appealed to the INAI to challenge Morena’s response in the negative. The INAI agreed with this media, but the party continued not to make the required data transparent. In the end, through another request to the INE, a copy of the lease that the party leadership established with an individual was obtained.

In its analysis of the case, the INE considered on Wednesday that the fine should amount to one thousand 500 times the UMA: a thousand for the lack of Morena and 500 for the reiteration of conduct contrary to transparency.
The electoral councilors called on all parties to act transparently and fulfill their obligations, since they are instances of public interest that receive resources from the State for their daily operation and campaigning.
