President Boric agrees with Pedro Castillo to strengthen joint work against crime and migrant smuggling

President Gabriel Boric and his Peruvian counterpart, Pedro Castillo, announced the strengthening of joint work to combat two issues that afflict both countries: crime and migrant smuggling. This, after the bilateral meeting they held in La Moneda.
After the IV Binational Cabinet, the President announced the creation of a new bilateral work scheme called “Plan Santiago”, in which five axes to be addressed were defined. Among them, he mentioned social issues and culture for integration; foreign trade; security and defence; tourism; Environment, among others.
In that sense, the head of state emphasized that “I want to highlight the fight against crime and security. Security is now a priority in both Peru and Chile and we know that there are organized crime gangs operating on both sides of the border.”
“Many times crime does not recognize borders, and therefore we are developing a joint work with Carabineros, Investigative Police and the National Police of Peru to confront these gangs,” he added.
He also announced that “we have implemented the binational work plan 2022-2023 to strengthen in particular the fight against human trafficking, smuggling of migrants.” “We will also hold a new meeting of the Peruvian-Chilean Joint Commission on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, to follow up and continue in the fight against drug trafficking,” Boric concluded.
