The importance of the National Prosecutor

In the current times and seeing what is happening in Chile, it is more than evident that it does not matter who occupies the position of National Prosecutor. This was something that the Editorial of November 21 of this same medium already indicated, but that apparently neither the Supreme Court, nor the President of the Republic or the Senate, have wanted to understand.
To begin with, we must ask ourselves what we expect from the person who is appointed. Perhaps herein lies one of the keys to the problem. Do we want a person whose main role is the administrative direction of the Public Ministry and be head of the Regional Prosecutors or, well, do we want a person who establishes and develops the national strategy against the insecurity that Chileans live and that is evident daily in the press or in the surveys that are published weekly?
If we want a head of the Regional Prosecutors, then the election is very simple and enough with the five candidates that the Supreme Court has in its hands. If we want a more powerful National Prosecutor with the ability to establish a strategy that seeks to mitigate or eliminate the negative effects of excessive illegal immigration, drug trafficking, insurgent violence in the Southern Macrozone or the insecurity that is perceived throughout Chile, I fear that the choice may not be so obvious. since we would be looking for the person who must solve the number one priority of those who live in Chile and who, apparently, might not be one of the five who are competing for the position.
If this Government or the previous ones had not renounced their responsibility for national security and, in particular, for the internal security of the Republic, everything would be easier, but since they decided to throw the ball into the corner and not assume their responsibility in the matter, passing it on to the Public Ministry, since they declare that Chile’s evils are criminal-criminal, Who leads the latter organization is not irrelevant and must have the characteristics and experience that the position demands.
Hopefully the trilogy composed of the Supreme Court, Presidency of the Republic and Senate have clear the job description of the position of National Prosecutor, what is expected of him or her, and the importance of this appointment in today’s Chile, and that an eventual bad appointment is something with which we will have to live eight years, an eternity and a luxury that we cannot afford, especially those who are suffering the impacts of a Public Ministry that has not solved the security problems of Chileans.
