INE: Unemployment in Chile reaches 7.9% in mobile quarter to November

Unemployment in Chile reached 7.9% in the moving quarter to November, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Thursday, which was in line with market expectations.
The record is 0.4 percentage points higher compared to the same period last year and 0.1 points lower compared to the previous quarter, said the INE.
“Although the unemployment rate presents a positive variation in the last 12 months of 0.4 percentage points, this variation is not statistically significant, it is in the margin of error, but it is the first increase after a series of continuous decreases from February-April 2021,” said the director of the INE, Sandra Quijada.
According to the report, the result was motivated by a greater increase in the labour force than that presented by employed people. This stood at 59.8% and 55.1%, growing 1.9 pp. and 1.5 pp., respectively.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.2%, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous moving quarter. In men it was 7.4%, while in women it stood at 8.7%.
In the Metropolitan region, unemployment in the previous quarter reached 8.7%, increasing 0.pp. in twelve months. This is due to the fact that the labor force (2.9%) had a higher increase than that of employed people (2.3%)
Increase in employed persons
The INE specified that there was an increase in employed people, both women (5.8%) and men (2.4%). This growth was driven in the sectors of commerce (4.4%), transport (12.2%), and education (7.3%).
The self-employed suffered a decline in twelve months, the first after 19 consecutive increases. The greatest incidence was seen by construction and other Services activities.
Informality
Meanwhile, the informal employment rate reached 27.3%, decreasing 0.9 points in twelve months.
“Informal employed people increased 0.3%, affected by men (0.5%) and women (0.2%), and by the categories of private salaried persons (11.0%) and domestic service personnel (13.9%),” said the INE.
