Latino Associations Support Hollywood Actors’ and Screenwriters Strike

Around thirty Latino associations in the United States expressed their support for Hollywood actors and screenwriters who are currently on strike seeking to improve their working conditions. At the same time, the groups reaffirmed the importance of representing the Latino community and culture on the big screen. In a joint letter, organizations including the Alliance of Latinx Executives, Hispanic Federation and Voto Latino, issued a call for solidarity at a crucial time for the film industry. “Actors and screenwriters deserve a settlement that protects their work and livelihood, so we will continue to support them as they fight for better treatment and fair compensation,” they wrote. In the statement, they highlight the narratives that Latinos capture through their art as a “tool for social transformation” that “shapes the way people perceive and consider our communities, both nationally and internationally,” especially after years of lack of visibility on screen. We have insisted on better representation within existing narratives by denouncing harmful and dangerous stereotypes, and we have held studio leaders accountable when they make irresponsible creative decisions that have serious real-world consequences.”
