The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will no longer be the only vaccine that will be given to American citizens. Now, in response to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement that the young biotechnology firm Moderna’s vaccine had been licensed to urgently apply to citizens, it will be becoming the second Covid-19 vaccine that has been empowered to officially combat health contingency in the United States.
It should be noted that the Modern vaccine takes away the record that Pfizer/BioNTech had reached when it was approved 19 days after the formal application was submitted before the competent authorities, while the American/German one had done so after 22 days; in both cases these are periods never before seen in the history of modern medicine. One fact in favor of the US pharmaceutical company is that Donald Trump’s administration had purchased 200 million doses, 100 million more than those purchased from Pfizer, so more people will be vaccinated using pfizer, although 2 separate doses are taken for 4 weeks each, the vaccine will be able to immunize 100 individuals. It should be mentioned that the Modern vaccine has been shown to be 94.1% effective, which means that it reduces the chances of getting SARS-CoV-2 by that percentage.

“With two vaccines now available for Covid-19 prevention, the FDA has taken a crucial new step in the fight against this pandemic,” said Stephen Hann, director of the FDA. Modern pharmaceutical company is committed to mobilizing, at first, 20 million doses before the end of 2020, 80 million more during the first 3 months of next year, while the remaining 100 million will be available in the second quarter of 2021.The purpose of the young Massachusetts-based company was “to have the trucks waiting next to the factory to be able to load and exit as soon as the FDA approved it,” said Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna a la AFP. So far, the people who will be provided in the first stage will be caregivers and residents of nursing homes, who by their advanced age turn out to be the most vulnerable to the consequences of the virus’s infection.
